Russ rarely misses a year without being injured. In '51 he was spiked covering First Base at the Polo Grounds and was out the remainder of the year. His best year was '49 when he won 17, lost 8 and led National League righthanders with a 3.08 ERA. Russ broke into pro ball in '42, went into the Service in '43 and was brought up to the majors by the Cubs from Nashville of the Southern Association during the '46 season. The Phils bought Russ after he posted a 10-10 record in '48.
