Smoky is highly regarded by the Phillies, hitting .296 in 110 games, hitting 27 doubles and driving in 56 runs. His fielding percentage was .978. He appeared in 94 games for the Cubs in 1951, then in October was traded to the Reds. However, he never played for Cincinnati because they sent him to the Phillies in December 1951.
