Only 4 pitchers in the NL appeared in more games than the big Pirate reliever in '52. Forrest has been a relief specialist since his earliest days in the pro game. In the 9 seasons prior to '53, he started only 78 times but appeared in no fewer than 344 ball games. After 2 years of pro ball, he went into the Service in '43. He was up with the Pirates in '48 and pitched for Indianapolis of the American Association in '49, '50 and '51.
"Hogie" has been shuttling between Brooklyn and St. Paul since 1947. He had trials with the Dodgers in '47 and '48 and finally made the grade in 1951. A fast, side-arm hurler, Phil had a great record at St. Paul, winning 16 in '47, 12 in '48, 22 in '49, 16 in '50 and striking out 495 in 4 seasons. 1946 was his first year in organized ball, and he won 15 of the 50 games Grand Forks won during the season. With a little more control, he'll be a winner in the majors.
