The highest batting average in the National League last year belonged to "Don" Padgett. The Cardinal catcher, whose original position was the outfield, and who has also played first base, batted .399 in 92 games for the Red Birds, driving in 53 runs. "Don" was converted to catching late in the 1938 season, and he has practiced diligently to master the art of backstopping. He has shown great promise behind the plate this Spring and should develop into an able receiver. This is Padgett's fourth season with the Cardinals.
