Johnny Rizzo made his debut in baseball at the age of 18 with the Galveston Club of the Texas League in 1931. In 1933 and 1934 he played with the Elmira Club, the latter year getting 166 hits in 106 games for an average of .379. From 1934 until the end of 1936 Rizzo saw action with the Houston Club and then moved to the Columbus Club in 1937, where he batted for an average of 358. His first year of major-league baseball was with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1938, where he played in 143 games, getting 167 hits for an average of 301, a remarkable batting feat for a "rookie."
