Although Saul had appeared in the majors in both 1949 and 1950 for brief periods with Detroit, he was considered a rookie in 1951 when he joined the White Sox in May. He finished the year with an earned run average of 2.78, the best in the league. Won 12, lost 8.

When the Brooklyn Dodgers wanted a first base- man last season they turned to the Jersey City Club and took "Bud" Clancy, who was hitting 307 for the International League.
