A crafty curve-ball artist, Clem saw plenty of action as a relief pitcher last year. He appeared in more games in '54 than in any of his previous 4 seasons with the Dodgers. Starting at Newport News in '44, he climbed up the Minor League ladder to St. Paul in '49 where he posted 12 Victories and won a trial with the Brooks. In '52 he joined the Dodgers and won 11 in '53.
Joe went from the University of Illinois to the A's in '45 and played 10 games for them before being sent to the minors. He came back again in 1946 for another chance and finally made the team in '49. Joe made the Southern Association All-Star team in 1948 while playing for Memphis. He batted .352 that year. In '50 with the A's, Joe led the team in hitting with .327 in 52 games and became the 5th man in major league history to bat in 6 runs in 1 inning.
A fireballer with facial hair and fine control, Hoffman drew a few parallels to Dennis Eckersley. And he opened the 21st century with a stretch matched only by his mustachioed predecessor. From 2000-09, the San Diego stopper joined "Eck" (1990-99) as the only chuckers to appear in 500 games and issue fewer than 125 walks in a calendar decade.
