Batting .320 during the 1950 season, the 6' New York Yankee outfielder drove 70 runs across the plate.
"Senor Al's" expert managing brought the Indians a pennant in 1954. He began managing in 1948 with Indianapolis, and won the Association pennant that year. In the intervening years, he has always finished second. He came to the Indians in 1950. Al began in baseball in 1925 and spent many years as an expert catcher with the Dodgers, Braves and Pirates. He also caught for the Indians in 1947.
Red Sox purchased Bill's contract from Atlanta late in 1946 for a reported five-figure check. He was an outfielder then but switched to infield in 1947 with Louisville, and wound up with a .340 batting average. In 1946 with Atlanta, before being sold to the Sox, he hit .389. Last season in his rookie year with Red Sox he batted .310 for 127 games and had a fielding average of .993.
