Though Dick didn't play a full season with the Pirates in '52, he led the team in hitting and was named the Shortstop on the Rookie All Star Team. An All-American Basketball player for straight years at Duke University, Dick stepped right from a college campus into a Big League spot. The $50,000 bonus baby's career was interrupted in '53, when he was called into the Service.
