In a determined effort to overcome their bull pen problems this year, the Cards made a big swap and came up with Frank Smith. One of the finest relief hurlers in the N.L., he saw plenty of service in 5 years as a Redleg. After starting his career in '46, he moved to Columbia in '48 and led the League with 21 Wins. He came to the Redlegs from Tulsa in '50 and won 12 in '52.

One of the leading batters of the Southern League is Walter French, Knoxville outfielder. Last year, playing with Little Rock, he swatted .336 in 152 games. French is a left hand batter, but throws right handed. Before going to the Southern League, he spent several seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics. His best year at hat with Philadelphia was in 1925, when he hit .370 in 67 games, French was also a football star as well as a baseball headliner while attending West Point, being named in the All America eleven. He was born in Moorestown, N. J., July 12, 1899, is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds.

After a 1951 season with the New York Yankees that wasn't too successful Frank was sent to Washington, and his work was a bright spot for the Senators. He appeared in 22 games; won 11 and lost 7 and his earned run average was a nice 2.93. First came to the Yanks in 1947, and had a 14-5 record that year, giving him a .737 percentage, best in the league.
