"Spud" Davis, who got his nickname because of his fondness for potatoes, started playing ball in 1926, for the Gulfport Club. He, in turn, was sold by them to the New York Yankees, who optioned him to Reading. In 1928 he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, and traded. to the Phillies in 1929, along with Homer Peel, for Jimmy Wilson. He played with the Phillies until 1933, batting better than .300 each year. At the end of the season he was traded back to the Cardinals, along with Eddie Delker, for Jimmy Wilson, and at the end of the 1936 season he was purchased by the Cincinnati Reds, who sold him back to the Phillies in 1938, along with Al Hollingworth, and $55,000 in cash, for "Buckie" Walters. In 11 years of major-league baseball, Spud" Davis has played 1138 games, getting 1094 hits, for a batting average of .309.
A two-time MVP, Gehrig was one of the most valuable players in baseball history. Nearly a century after his prime, his significance can be reassessed using metrics he never heard of. The Hall of Famer's nine seasons with a WAR of at least 8.0 rank fourth all time behind only Barry Bonds (12), Babe Ruth (12) and Willie Mays (11).
Pete, a former A.L. Rookie of the Year in 1963, only appeared in 84 ballgames in 1966. The White Sox's third baseman made a fine come- back in 1967 as he led Chicago in home runs and runs batted in.
