Few indeed are there who have never heard of "Red" Grange, the "Galloping Ghost" of Illinois. The number "77" worn on "Red's" Jersey became famous where ever football is known. Grange was born in Evanston. Playing sensational football for four years at the University of Illinois, he established one of the greatest records of all time. Scoring five touchdowns in five attempts at carrying the ball, and four of these made during the first twelve minutes of play, on runs of 95, 67, 56, 45, and 15 yards is the phenomenal record made by Grange in the game against Michigan in 1924. Grange kept in training, by delivering huge cakes of ice during his summer vacations. Now playing Professional Football, but expected to take up coaching.
Regarded as one of the best-fielding shortstops in the American League, the Yankees got Willie from the St. Louis Browns last year as "pennant insurance". He broke into organized ball with Sherman-Denison in '48 and played for Chattanooga in 1949-50. In '51, Willie got a trial with Washington and hit .444 in 7 games. He was with Chicago and St. Louis in '52.
Joe came to the Cards in midseason last year and immediately showed his Big League ability. The timely hitting that made him a standout in the Minors made him No. 1 choice for the regular Redbird 1st sacker job. Breaking in with a flashy .366 mark at Johnson City in '49, he moved right along, and after 2 years in Service, returned to hit .316 for Rocheester in 66 games in '53.
