Joined Athletics at end of 1941 season and has remained with them ever since with exception of two years spent in military service. He had one of his best seasons last year when he played in 113 games for A's and wound up with a batting average of .305. Included in his hits were 17 doubles. For last 3 seasons he has hit .300 or better with an average of .307 for 1946 and .300 for 1947.



In '52, "Vinegar Bend" struck out 148 NL batters to rank 4th in the League. The 103 passes he issued tied him for the League leadership The Cards brought him up after sensational seasons of Minor League pitching during which he hurled for 3 pennant winners. He posted ERA's of 1.98, 2.48 and 1.96, chalked up Strikeout totals of 175, 227 and 257 and won 45 games against only 24 losses.



Rarin' to atone for his off-season last year, the strong-armed lefthander has been one of Cincinnati's top hurlers in the past. The stylish southpaw has seventeen major league shutouts to his credit.
