The huge bonus paid to Bob for signing a Detroit contract in '53 looked like a good investment to Tiger fans last year. Used mostly as a relief pitcher, Bob's wide-breaking curve and flashing fastball placed him 4th in E.R.A.'s among American League Hurlers. Before deciding on Baseball as a career, he won a Yale scholarship for his straight "A" average in High School.
A total of 15 different brands were used on the backs of the 1909 T206 Set cards (American Beauty, Broadleaf, Carolina Brights, Cycle, Drum, El Principle de Gales, Hindu, Lenox, Old Mill, Piedmont, Polar Bear, Sovereign, Sweet Caporal, Tolstoi, and Uzit) - but there are nearly 40 different backs with several of those brands having more than one variation.
A former All-American Football Star for the University of California, Jackie had his best year in '54. Displaying the power that made him a top prospect when he signed with the Yanks in '50, he led the Red Sox in R.B.I.'s and placed third in the A.L. As a Yankee, Jackie saw part-time service until he was traded to Washington in '52, before joining the Red Sox in '54.
