As the first Black American League pitcher, Satchel made his starting debut in 1948 before 72,434 fans intrigued by the 42-year old Negro Leagues legend.
A snappy young ball player and a good. prospect. With Montreal in 1954, Chico hit .282 and led the International League in doubles with 44. He's a great base runner and in his four years in organized ball he has stolen exactly 100 bases. In his rookie year with Billings of the Pioneer League in 1951 he hit .284 and stole 34 bases. He has played Cuban winter league ball for the past four years. He graduated from Instituto Municipal Ecnologico in Havana in 1950.
Gerry is one of the National League's better pitchers, although he had an off season in 1954. With the St. Louis Cardinals he appeared in 48 games, winning 7 and losing 13. He worked 156 innings and gave up 198 hits. A better idea of his effectiveness on the mound can be gained from his 1953 record. Gerry had an 18-9 mark for 40 games. His earned run average was 3.99, and he gave up 243 hits in 230 innings pitched. The Cards traded him to the Redlegs for the 1955 season.
