Designated as the Cubs' first year player, Don stayed with the parent club all season. He was one of the most sought after college players in the country. Don is one of the fastest men on the squad and has great range and hands at shortstop. He played extremely well for Chicago last season and they are looking forward to his contribution this year.
Johnny was player-manager of Birmingham for 3 years and a coach of the Pirates for an equal length of time before joining the Cardinals coaching staff. His active playing career stretched from 1927 through 1948. He caught for the Cubs in '30, the Senators in '37, the Braves in '37 and '38, the Reds in '41, '44 and '45 and the Pirates in '48. Johnny's best year at the plate was 1947 when he hit .338 for Indianapolis.
Vic first gained fame as an All American football player at Ohio State University. Graduated from Ohio State and entered the Army. After his discharge Vic was signed as a free agent by Branch Rickey. First bonus player signed under the new legislation adopted at 1952 Major League meetings in Phoenix. While Vic was playing ball in service he batted .356 in 61 games. He works for Pirates' President John Galbreath in the off season.
