"Began his professional career as a pitcher for Paris, Texas in the Blue Grass League in 1924, but was such a hard hitter, that he decided to shift to the outfield. He later began playing first base. Hurst has been holding down the first sack for the Philadelphia Club ever since 1928. He has four times batted over the .300 mark in the National League. Last year his average fell to .267. Hurst is a six footer, weighing around 190 pounds. He bats left-handed, but throws right-handed. He was born in Maysville, Ky., in 1905."
One of best sluggers in National League, Hank has his sights on Babe Ruth's home run record. Was with Reds briefly in 1941 but was sent back to minors. With Syracuse of International League in 1947 Hank batted .336, led in runs batted in with 141; most hits 182; most runs 130; most total bases 362; hit 50 homers. Climax came when he was voted IL's Most Valuable Player. Last season he hit .260, hit 35 homers and batted in 97 runs.
Milt has had experience as president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary of various minor league clubs. He played with the Giants, Cardinals, Dodgers and Phillies in his 15 years in the National League. As a manager, Milt's teams have won 5 pennants in 15 years. He coached for the Cubs and Dodgers before coming to the Pirates. Milt is Eddie Stanky's father-in-law.
