The toughest job in baseball is that of the pinch-hitter who goes into a game at a moment's notice and has to face a pitcher without benefit of a warmup. That has been Leo Nonnenkamp's chief duty with the Boston Red Sox since he joined them in 1938, and he has not done badly at all. Nonnenkamp came up from the Red Sox's Little Rock farm as a better than average outfielder. In his first year with the Sox, he appeared in 87 games, hit close to .300 and drove in 18 runs. Last year, he did not see much action, but contributed 18 hits in the pinches.
