Although he was born and raised in Chicago, Groth was signed by Detroit. He finally made it back to his home when Baltimore traded him to the White Sox. A steady hitter, Groth also is a fleet center fielder. His .993 fielding average led the league in 1951. He earned a major league try-out by leading International League in runs, hits, doubles and triples in 1948.
A Cards' coach since '51, Mike has played every position on the field. In '33 he led the Western League in Batting with .380. He topped American Assn. Pitchers with 20 wins at Columbus in '35 and led the International League with 24 at Rochester in '40. Mike played 4 years for the Cards and 6 for the Red Sox, with a 12-7 pitching mark for Boston in '44.
"Frick" had the best Earned Run Average on the A's staff in '53, his first full Big League season. He came up to the A's at the end of '52, after posting a 17-8 mark for Ottawa and leading the International League with a 2.26 ERA. A former Dodger farmhand, Marion started with Johnstown in '47 and in 1950-51 won 15 and 10 for Mobile.
