Experts generally agree Richards is one of baseball's shrewdest leaders. He took over the second-division White Sox in 1951 and boosted them to fourth. They have finished third the past two seasons. Richards gets fullest effort particularly from pitchers. He was a great defensive catcher with the Giants and Tigers in his playing days.

Playing for the White Sox in '52, Bill appeared in more games than any other pitcher in the American League. He's been in pro ball since '39. After coming out of the Service in '46 Bill had a great season at Rocky Mount where he won 28, lost 3 and led the League with 456 Strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA. He had a 15-2 record for Scranton in '47. He pitched for the Browns in 1948-49-50. Bill was traded to the Red Sox in February, 1953.

Paul Derringer started pitching for the Danville Club of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League in 1927, winning 10 games and losing 8 his first year with them. After two years with Danville and two years with Rochester, he joined the St. Louis Cardinals, and was the National League's leading pitcher his first year with them, by winning 18 games and losing 8. In 1933 he was traded to Cincinnati, along with Earl Adams and Allyn Stout, for Leo Durocher, Frank Henry and John Ogden. In 1936 while with Cincinnati, he led the National League pitchers for games pitched, 51, and in 1938 led the same league in innings pitched, 307. His 8-year major-league record shows that he played 337 games, winning 123 games and losing 130 and striking out 890 batters.
