Name that player!

A lawyer in his spare time, Muddy Ruel has been a coach for the Chicago White Sox since 1935. He was a catcher, and a good one, as a player, active from 1917 through 1934. He was a clever handler of pitchers, a good hitter and an excellent catcher with a fielding average of .982. He played in sequence with the Yankees, Red Sox, Senators, Red Sox, Tigers, Browns and Chicago, winding up with a lifetime batting mark of .275. In 1924, with the Senators, he participated in twenty-three double plays, and in the World Series, ac- cepted 56 chances over the seven games, and made 51 putouts, a series record for a catcher.

The slender left-hander with the high kick is one of the game's top hurlers. Had 22 wins, and 14 losses, in 1951, the third straight year that he won 20 or more games. His 1951 E.R.A. was 2.98. Led the league in shutouts (7), complete games pitched (26). Tied for lead in strikeouts (164).

In 130 games in 1950, hitting .244 and driving in 54 runs. Had best batting averages in first two years with the Cardinals. In rookie year, 1945, hit .261. In 1946, hit .273. Began in 1941 with Williamson of the Mountain State League. Also spent the next season with that club. Moved to the Cardinals' Rochester farm for the two following campaigns. Then advanced to parent club. A good fielding backstop.
