The following year he became the property of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and played with them for 3 seasons in the infield. At the close of the 1936 season he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers for Ralph Birkofer and Eddie Brandt, being the regular third baseman for the Dodgers since that time. His 5-year major-league record shows that he has gotten 457 hits in 511 games, for a batting average of .265.



The team Captain of the Giants has become one of the best shortstops in baseball. He had a good season in 1952, appearing in 151 games and batting 301. Al was a good football player in college. However, he elected to go into baseball and signed with the Boston Braves. In 1948 he batted .322 for 137 games, was voted Rookie of the Year that season. Came to the Giants for the 1950 season.
