The 'sinker ball' specialist opened the '52 season with the Pirates and went to the Cards in mid-season. In '53 he gets his first crack at the American League. Bill pitched for San Francisco from '43 through '48 and was brought up to the Majors after a 17-7 season in his last year with the Seals. A relief ace, Bill appeared in 59 games for the Pirates in '51 to set an all-time Buc record. He attended the University of California for 3 years.
One of greatest players in baseball. Only National Leaguer to win Most Valuable Player award three times - 1943, 1946 and 1947. Started baseball as pitcher, but shoulder injury stopped that. His stance at bat is something to see. Winding up like a windmill he has made season averages of .347 and .357. Last season, for third time in his major league career, he led NL in batting with .376 average and in six other departments. Four times an All-Star.
In 2006, Mike made a strong comeback from a subpar season. He ranked third in the AL in doubles (once getting two bags on eight straight hits) and his .987 FLD% placed second among AL third basemen.
