"Mike" Gonzales, who was one of the smartest catchers in baseball for many years, is one man who lives baseball all year. When he is through for the season with the St. Louis Cardinals, "Mike" returns to his native Cuba where he manages a league team. "Mike's" pet expression used to be, "He good field, no hit." As a ball player, Gonzales a leading catcher with the St. Louis club. He also played with the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs, his playing career starting in 1912 and ending in 1933. Gonzales made an unassisted double play against Philadelphia in 1915, a rare and outstanding feat for a catcher. He has coached for the Cards since 1934, and in 1938, late in the season, managed the club.
Collectors should be on the lookout for forged 1909 T206 Set cards — particularly those of Wagner, the Big Four, or Cobb cards.
