Bunting - With a base runner on first and none or one out, the bunt is often indicated. Often the batter especially such shrewd bunters as Averill of Cleveland, will plant himself in front of the plate as the pitcher prepares to deliver the ball, making his intention to bunt obvious. An alert pitcher, by pitching high - a spot most difficult to bunt - will cause the batter to pop up or foul off. Some major leaguers, in such cases, throw at the batter, causing him to duck and giving the catcher a chance to make a quick play on the unprotected runner.
