Fast on the bases, Bobby hit into only 2 Double Plays in 1950 and 6 in '51, one of the top records in the National League. He hit .335 for Ogden in 1939, his first year in pro ball, and led the Pioneer League with .356 the next year. '41 was spent at Columbia, where he batted .348. After spending '42 at Syracuse, Bobby served in the Army Air Forces for 3 years and came up with the Reds in 1946. His best Big League batting marks were .272 in '47, .298 in '48 and .282 in '50.

Mel got into only 23 games for the Senators in 1953, hitting .191. He played amateur and semi-pro ball before he entered organized ball in 1942 with Cordele, Ga. and Columbus, S. C. He first came to the majors with the Boston Red Sox. He was in their camp first in 1949. The Senators acquired him from the Sox. An excellent fielder. He spent 1947 and 1948 with Birmingham and was with Louisville in the Spring of 1949.

The A's really missed Gus's booming base hits last season when he was sidelined with an injury. The loss was tremendous since they were counting on "Ozark Ike" to repeat his '53 performance when he poled 42 Round Trippers. Gus broke into the Majors with Chicago in '49 and hit .318 his first year. Traded to the A's in '51, he led the A.L. with 33 Homers and 129 R.B.I.'s.
