Coffee Talk Name that player!
Putting on an unprecedented offensive display is one way to endear yourself to new fans, and that's how Tejada introduced himself to Baltimore locals in 2004. The prized free-agent acquisition became the first shortstop to tally 200 hits and 150 RBI, benchmarks previously reached by the likes of Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby and Babe Ruth.
Among the most notable comebacks of 1940 you'll find the name of Elden Auker, pitcher with the St. Louis Browns. Auker was sold to the Browns in the winter of 1940 by the Boston Red Sox. With the Red Sox he failed to display the stuff that had made him one of the best moundsmen on the staff of the Detroit Tigers. The switch to the Browns seemed to put new life into the lanky Kansan - he won 16 and dropped only 11 for a percentage of .593, his top effort in three seasons.
From 1949 through 1953 Vic has contributed 92 wins to the Yankees' five straight pennants. He won 21 games each in 1949, 1950 and 1951. Vic is one of the few major leaguers who has had better records in the major leagues than in the minors. His minor league records were not overly impressive, but figures can be misleading. Vic first joined the Yankees in 1946, late in the season. He was optioned to Portland in 1947, then came back later that same year.
