A veteran of eight seasons with Cleveland, Odell Hale was tagged "Bad News" because he was exactly that to pitchers. He was given the nickname by sports writers in the Cotton States League but he carried it into the majors. and has proved a thorn in the side to many a twirler. His major league batting average is just under .300, and he has driven across 557 runs, up to this season. Hale plays either second or third, and is a steady, capable fielder. He was involved in a play of a lifetime on September 7, 1935, when with the bases filled and none out, a line drive by Joe Cronin hit him (Hale) on the head after bouncing off his glove, and led to a triple play. The shortstop caught the ball, threw to second, and a toss to first completed the triple-killing.
