"Up among the leaders in National League fielding last year was Hugh Critz, a Starkville, Miss., boy who crashed into professional baseball in 1920 with Chattanooga in the Southern League and has been playing second base ever since. He entered the National League via the Cincinnati gate and has been with the Giants since 1930. He finished 1933 as one of the two best fielding second base- men with an average of .982. As a boy Hugh was keen on pitching, but when he got into professional baseball he just gravitated to the infield and has been there ever since. He is 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds."
Stanley Frank Musial nicknamed "The Man" by Brooklyn fans because of hitting in Ebbets Field. Started baseball as pitcher but has played in 4 World's Series and 9 All Star games as a Cardinal outfielder. Named N.L. Most Valuable player three times. Led or tied for N.L. lead 4 times for no. games played, 4 times for runs scored, 5 times for no. of hits, 6 times for no. of doubles, 5 times for triples, once for RBI; 6 times N.L. batting champ; 6 times N.L. slugging leader.
One of the smoothest-fielding shortstops in the majors, Gran broke into pro ball with the Phils in 1944. Sent to Utica in '45, he hit .258 and .291 in '47, and led all Eastern League Shortstops in Fielding (.946). After trials in '45 and '46, when he spent most of the season in Military Service, he became the Phils No. 1 shortstop in 1948. In '49, Gran was tops among National League Shortstops in Double Plays and Assists. In the '50 World Series, he hit .429 in 4 games.
