In 122 games in 1950, hitting .283. Had 127 hits, good for 185 bases. Drove in 60 runs. Entered organized baseball in 1940. Made the majors at the end of the 1943 season with the Indians. In the service for the next 2 years. Returned to Cleveland in 1946. With Pittsburgh in 1947. In the minors in 1948. Up to the Yanks in 1949. Took part in 112 games that year, and had a 270 batting average.
In his fourth season with the Philadelphia Athletics, "Sam" Chapman looms as one of the top outfielders in the league. Continuing the steady improvement he has shown every season, Chapman drove in 75 runs for the Mackmen last year, and hit 23 home runs; although his batting average was only .276. The former University of California All-American football star needs only a little more consistency in his batting to become one of the league's outstanding power hitters. Fast afoot, he covers plenty of ground in the outfield too.
Les Cain: In a brief trial with the Tigers, Les gained his first big league win in 1968. The hard throwing southpaw fanned 76 batters in 77 innings for Syracuse in the International League. Dave Campbell: After breaking in at Lakeland in 1964 wth a .369 average, Dave was sent up to the Southern Association. There the second sacker batted .310 in 51 ballgames. He has spent '67 & '68 in the International League with Toledo.
