The Denver Nuggets first appeared in the NBA in 1949-50, but that team had nothing to do with the ABA franchise that changed its name from Rockets to Nuggets in 1974-75. The NBA borrowed the Slam-Dunk Championship from the ABA, recycling the event in 1984. However, it wasn't until Michael Jordan burst onto the scene in 1985 that the competition was elevated to its current level of popularity. Jordan claimed his first title in 1987, and the next year, he became the only player ever to win back-to-back contests. With a 50 on his final dunk after taking off from the free throw line with his body fully extended until the one-handed finish, Jordan bested Dominique Wilkins in 1988.
