Divided 1950 between Philadelphia Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates. Batted .310 in 84 games for the A's. Batted .288 in 58 games for Pirates. Broke into pro ball in 1939. Reached the majors with the St. Louis Browns in 1946 after 3 years in the service. Had most hits in the League in 1948 (207). Batted .321 in 1948, and .324 in 1949. Traded to Philadelphia at the end of the 1949 season.
One of the top winners on Braves' staff in 1972, Ron was the only Braves' player ever selected to play in an All-Star game as a rookie. He retired the only two batters he faced in the 1968 classic.
