"One of the most sensational youngsters in the American League. A right-handed pitcher, 6 feet, 1 1⁄2 inches tall, and weighing 174 pounds. Broke into the professional game in Indianapolis in 1930 after starring in semi-pro baseball ranks. Last year, his second in the big league, he won 16 games and lost 11, while pitching for a team which finished 4th. He attended Butler College in Indiana, featuring in basketball as well as baseball, but left college in his senior year to enter the professional baseball ranks. Has fine assortment of pitching stuff."
The Pirates bought him from the Cleveland Indians after the end of the 1947 season. He was in 70 games for the Bucs last year, hitting .239. Broke into pro ball in 1939 and played with Bisbee, Joplin, Norfolk and Binghamton before joining the service. Took 1946 spring training with the Yanks and was sent to Kansas City for the season. Hit .303 that year.
George edged into the 1949 American League batting championship by two ten-thousandths of a point (.3429). Had 38 doubles in 179 hits, second high in league for two-baggers. First full big-time season was with the Athletics in 1944. Traded to Tigers, May, 1946. Hit .322 that season. Led league in third-base fielding in 1945 and 1946.
