Right name, Anthony Pietruszka. Two clubs in Texas League turned him down in one year, but he got a trial with Corsicanna, Texas in the Lone Star League, and made good. Broke in as pitcher, but shifted to second base, and has been an infielder ever since. Bought by Pittsburgh in 1930 from Waco, Texas, after hitting .319, 26 home runs and stealing 30 bases. Sent to Wichita in 1931, where he swatted .336 and stole 42 bases. Went back to Pirates to stay. Last year hit .286 in 154 games. 26 years old, 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 180 pounds; bats and throws right handed.
The 1956 A.L. Rookie of the Year, Luis led the circuit for 9 consecutive seasons in stolen bases. He batted .309 in the '59 World Series.
"Whitey" Whitehead, who at his peak was the best second baseman in the National League, switched to third base this Spring and promises to be one of the best, if not the top, guardian of the "hot corner" for the New York Giants. "Whitey" has fully regained his health, and has been playing the type of ball which earned him the plaudits of the baseball world in the past. Whitehead is a well-educated ball player, having graduated from the University of North Carolina with Phi Beta Kappa honors. He is a brilliant fielder, and in April last year, made 11 assists in a game against Boston. He also wields a damaging bat, if not a heavy one.
