In 1947 with Springfield played in 107 games, scored 94 runs and collected 138 hits for 232 bases. Slugging included 29 doubles, 7 triples and 17 homers and a .366 batting average. He began 1948 with Toledo of AA and had a .296 batting average when called up to parent Browns. In 69 games for Browns he had a .238 average.
With a 1.19 WHIP over his first three seasons in the Minors, Smith has shown the ability to keep hitters off base. av The left-hander also averaged over 100 strikeouts per season from 2005-07, proving that he can rear back and come up with a big punchout when he needs to. He sparkled with a 2-1 record and 2.54 ERA over his first six ML starts in '08.
Casey is one of baseball's most colorful personalities, and also one of its ablest. In his four years as manager of the New York Yankees he has led them to four American League pennants and four World Series' victories. He's a great story teller and a keen student of the game.
