Joe Stripp, Brooklyn, a New Jersey pro- duct, was one of the high priced players of the middle '20s, costing Cincinnati $50,000 and five players when he was sold by Columbus. A versatile player who can play any of the infield positions well, Stripp figured in a surprise trade in which the Reds sent Cuccinello, now with the Braves, and Sukeforth, to Brooklyn for Babe Herman, Lombardi and Gilbert in 1932. In a year when outstanding third basemen are scarce in the National League he ranks as a leader in his field, a .300 hitter, possessor of a great arm and a sharp fielder.
In 1942 with Boston he won four and lost seven. Then came war. Back with Braves he blossomed into one of League's best right-handers, to win 20 and lose 14 in 1946. His 1947 record was even better - 21 wins, 12 losses and an ERA of 3.52. Last season he topped major league pitchers with 24 victories, 15 losses. Outstanding Brave World Series pitcher, beating Bob Feller in opener 1-0, and later losing 2-1.
When Monty broke his ankle in the Spring of '52, Giant pennant hopes were dealt a severe blow. Monty came back at the end of the '52 season to lead the Giants in Batting. He was the top hitter in the '51 World Series with 11 Hits and a .458 mark. Monty hit. 300 in '50. In '51 he topped the NL with 121 RBI's and batted .312. The former Lincoln University star has been in organized baseball since 1949.
