Coffee Talk Name that player!
One of the greatest of modern defensive outfielders, "Johnny" Cooney is also one of the most durable. Age and years of activity have not seemed to dull either his batting eye or his fielding ability. Last year, he played in 108 games of the Braves, and batted a powerful .318, driving in 21 runs and scoring 40 himself. As an outfielder, he made only 2 errors, with a percentage of .993. Starting as a pitcher, Cooney has been in baseball since 1921. With the exception of three seasons with Brooklyn, he has spent all his major league time with Boston.
Reno has a fine arm and can fire bullets across the diamond. Digging out hot smashes is second nature to this fine fielder. Reno's average trailed off last year, but he has natural ability, a keen batting eye, and he figures to have a fine year in '59. Reno was born in St. Vito, Italy.
When Jobe is staring down the batter, he's running through a mental Rolodex of options with which to fell his foe. If he wants to shatter hitters' hopes with a breaking pitch instead, his sharp slider/curve hybrid is in the cards.
