Coffee Talk Name that player!
The sinkerball relief specialist was selected from the New York Mets during the October expansion draft. As a rookie in 1967, Don was credited with 3 saves and posted 4 victories in relief. He has excellent control and his pitches are tough to hit into the air.
Pitchers treat Soto like the unwanted dish at dinner, offering a hard pass before eyeing the next thing at the plate. The thought of giving him anything to hit is enough to make stomachs turn. So twirlers reject the chance and counter with a forkful of balls, walking him a league-high 145 times (including 23 intentionally) in 2021.
THE BEST HITTER I'VE EVER SEEN by Solly Hemus. While playing with Houston in the Texas League in 1947, I first saw Stan Musial hit. Knowing he was a great hitter I watched him very closely. After he had hit a few balls on a line, he got under one a little bit and practically drove it out of sight. His reflexes are his biggest asset. With his great wrists and reflexes he can still hit line drives to all fields, even though he may have been fooled before. It is a pleasure to watch one of the greatest hitters of all times hit during the course of a season.
