The 'sinker ball' specialist opened the '52 season with the Pirates and went to the Cards in mid-season. In '53 he gets his first crack at the American League. Bill pitched for San Francisco from '43 through '48 and was brought up to the Majors after a 17-7 season in his last year with the Seals. A relief ace, Bill appeared in 59 games for the Pirates in '51 to set an all-time Buc record. He attended the University of California for 3 years.
A top-flight catcher during his 9 years in the majors, Paul returned to the Big Leagues in 1951 to pilot the White Sox. He led them to a first division berth. In pro ball since 1926, he played with the Dodgers, Giants and A's between 1932 and '35. Paul managed Atlanta (1938-42) and played with the Tigers from 1943 through 1946, leading American League Catchers in Fielding in '43. Paul piloted Buffalo (1947-49) and Seattle (1950).
If 1968 was the Year of the Pitcher, it was certainly the year of Denny McLain. Last season he won The Cy Young Award and was named the AL's M.V.P.
