Breaking into organized baseball in '44 as a Yankee farmhand, Tom spent 2 years in the Navy in '45 and '46 and waited until '50 before making the majors. After a good year at Beaumont in '49, he was drafted by the Browns and played 124 games at shortstop and third base in '50. Last winter the Browns traded his to the White Sox who sent him to the Senators. He's a college graduate and a trained physical education teacher.
Bill appeared in 21 games for the Yankees in 1952. He was with Syracuse of the International League in 1951. He had the most strike outs in the International League, 131. He went to the mound 35 times, and he won 16 while losing 10. His earned run average was 2.96, and he pitched 14 complete games. His work was responsible for the Yanks purchasing his contract in August.
Went to White Sox from Indians after start of 1951 season. Regarded by many as the outstanding rookie in the league. Had a .326 batting average - second best in the circuit. Led in triples (14) and in stolen bases (31). Hit 10 homers and 34 doubles. Batted in 76 runs.
