Ned was the first American League pitcher since 1924 to win 20 games for a last place team. In doing so, he won 38% of the Browns' victories in 1951. He also led the League in Complete Games with 24 and pitched a 2-hitter. His first year of pro ball was 1944, when he won 21, pitched a no-hit game and had the best ERA (1.21) in the Ohio State League. The Browns brought him up in '48 after he won 17 for San Antonio in '47. In '50 his 3.39 ERA was 2nd best in the League.



Ethan Allen, Phillies, a Cincinnati boy who went to Cincinnati University and joined the Cincinnati Reds immediatly on graduating. Ethan Allen has, since, played with the Giants and Cardinals before coming to the Phillies in 1934. With a ten year average of .299, despite several years when he was disabled through illness, Allen, at 32, is counted one of the most dangerous hitters in the pinch in the National League, a line driver more than a slugger. A descendent of New England Colonial stock, he was named after the hero of Ticonderoga.



Gene is the tallest player the League and a professional basketball player with the Boston Celtics. He was named the "Minor League Player of the Year" in his first season of pro ball (1951). That year, Gene won 20, lost 4, struck out 136, and had a 1.92 Earned Run Average. The Braves brought him up for a brief stay in '52, then sent him to Milwaukee where he won 11, lost 4 and had 3.15 ERA. Sent to Toledo in April, 1953.
