Had eighth highest batting average in American League in 1953. Broke into majors with Yankees in 1948 and has compiled .294 lifetime batting average. His best year was 1950 when he hit .320. Tied major league record by getting two hits in one inning in 1952. Spent five years in Marine Corps.
Though Stan's career in the majors goes back to 1942, this is his first season in the American League. In the National League he has played for the Dodgers, Pirates and Cards. He was in 59 games in 1951, batting .267. He drove in 14 runs. Recorded a fielding percentage of .968.
Willie returns to the Giants from the Army in time for the 1954 season. He is probably the greatest young fielder there is. In addition, he's a dangerous man with a bat. He pulled a play in 1951 that many call one of baseball's greatest in a game against the Dodgers. He caught a ball on the run in deep center field, whirled and threw a perfect strike to the plate, catching the runner trying to score after the catch.
