Tom led the A.L. and 4 Minor Leagues in Fielding during his 21-year playing career. In '31 with the Red Sox, he topped A.L. Outfielders with a .993 mark and 443 Putouts. He also led the North Dakota League in '23, Southern Assn. in '29, Piedmont in '39 and Interstate in '40. With the A's, he served 2 years as Scout and 3 as Coach before joining Baltimore this season.
His performance in 1951 with Milwaukee prompted many observers to name Ernie "the best pitcher to appear in the League in years." He had a 15-4 record and the best earned run average in the league, 2.62. He allowed only 168 hits in 196 innings and he struck out 133, walking only 63. Played with U. S. Marine team during war and had a great record. He saw action on Okinawa.
Entered OB when 18. He started with Durham in Piedmont League, won 4, lost 6. His blazing speed moved him up to Montreal in the International League where he lost 1 ball game, winning none. The Dodgers then picked him up and he finished his first year in baseball in the major. leagues - with a 2-2 record for the Dodgers. The following two seasons were spent in service. He rejoined Dodgers in 1946 and won 2 while losing 5. The following year he reversed the record, making it 5-2. He is one of major's best pitching prospects.
