Keith was the gold standard for leadership, game knowledge, timely high-contact hitting, and first base brilliance for much of his career. The former NL MVP spent seven seasons in New York, where he led the League in RBI for the 1986 World Series Champions.
Joe showed flashes of brilliance as the Cards' 4th starter in '53 despite his losing record. He had a promising 7-4 mark in his rookie '51 campaign with St. Louis, but hurt his arm in '52 and slipped to 7-10. Joe broke into pro ball with a 16-8 mark and a 2.70 ERA at St. Joseph in '48. He was 14-9 at Omaha in '49 and 16-16 with 165 Strikeouts at Houston in '50.
He is already being called another "Babe Ruth." His amazing clouting drove out 51 home runs last year, to tie Johnny Mize. In 1946, he also led the National League in home runs. Second player since 1900 to do this as a rookie. He joined the Pirates in 1943 but, due to Uncle Sam's prior claim on his time, it was not until 1946 that he appeared in a game for the Pirates.
