The Giants paid $65,000 for Davey's contract after his 2nd season at Pensacola in '48. In 1949 he hit .290 for Atlanta of the Southern Association. After a brief trial with the Giants at the end of '49 he was sent to Minneapolis in '50, where he hit .280 and had a league-leading Fielding average of .973. Davey was batting .287 for Minneapolis in '51 when the Giants recalled him.



The free-swinging outfielder tied a major league record when he hit four consecutive home runs. Three were slammed on August 12th and one on August 14th, 1966! The last homer came in a pinch-hitting role!



By Sept. 2 of last season, Curt had piled up a 17-8 record. He was a cinch to be a 20-game winner. But his National Guard unit was activated. Off Curt went to the Army. He is considered one of the best pitching prospects discovered in recent years. The Phils landed him, after his graduation from high school. Pitched first big-league game on the last day of the 1947 season.
