Carl joined the A's at the age of 16 in '43 and has been with them since, except for 2 years in the Army. He had his best year in '48 when he chalked up 14 wins against 8 losses and had a .393 Earned Run Average. Carl had records of 9-12 in '49, 3-10 in '50 and 1-12 in '51. An excellent hitter for a pitcher, he is often used as a pinch hitter. He played 52 games in the outfield for the A's in '48 and batted .298.



Has lifetime batting average of .315 and is second only to Ted Williams among active American League players. Has fallen below .300 only once in seven seasons with Indians. Top average was .336 in pennant year, 1948. Originally a speed merchant, he has been swinging for distance more in recent years and reached homer peak of 13 in 1953.



Although he is now catcher in the big league, Gus Mancuso started his career as a high school pitcher, only went behind the bat when the team needed a catcher, and has stuck to it ever since. Started professional career in Texas League after starring in City League in Houston. Went to St. Louis Cardinals in 1928, but didn't win a regular place until 1930. Last year caught 103 games, batting .284. Traded to New York Giants, October, 1932. Born in Galveston, Texas, 1905. Bats and throws right-handed, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs around 170 pounds.
