Overcoming the "sophomore jinx" that has felled many a rookie star, Barney McCosky established himself as a natural star with the Detroit Tigers last year. McCosky finished the season among the six leading hitters in the league, with an average of .340 on an even 200 hits. His hitting produced 57 tallies for the Tigers, and he scored 123 himself. His 19 triples gave him top honors in that department, while his fielding mark of .983 for 143 games was second only to "Walt" Judnich, of the Browns. Barney hit .304 in the World Series.

Baseball Thrills. Washington, D.C. - April 17, 1953. Mantle Blasts 565 Ft. Home Run. Mickey Mantle displayed some more of his formidable power this afternoon. He slammed into a pitch delivered by Senator pitcher Chuck Stobbs and slammed the ball soaring 565 ft. Sports writers all seemed to agree that this was the longest ball ever hit at Griffith Stadium. The clout soared out of the park and landed two blocks away. The switch-hitter was batting righty against southpaw Stobbs.

1947 was Sam's rookie year in the majors, and only his second in organized baseball. Playing in 123 games in the outfield and at first base for the Red Sox he wound up with a .302 batting average which included 14 doubles, 8 triples and 12 homers. He also batted in 73 runs. Last season his average slumped to 233. With Scranton in 1946 he hit .342.
