Fielding - First basemen must learn to take throws on either side of the bag, changing their feet, according to the side the throw comes and getting the advantage of the extra stretch. All first sackers must learn to use the glove hand alone, making one hand catches when necessary. Also on high throws from the infielders, a first baseman can often reach a ball while playing the back of the bag that he would miss by playing the front. Often, on wide throws that draw the baseman off the bag to the left, he can tag the runner out and save the error. Ability to make one hand catches, in which Hack of the Cubs is an artist, are necessary accomplishments of every infielder.
