Understudy to Ernie Lombardi, "Bill" Hershberger has a definite future as a catcher with the Cincinnati Reds. A good hitter, he is fast developing into a better than average catcher. His batting mark with the Reds this year was .345 in 63 games, with 23 runs batted in on 60 hits. In the World Series, he pinch-hit for Paul Derringer in the seventh inning of the final game, and drove across one run with a single, quite a feat for any understudy against the Yankees. Hershberger was once the property of the Yankees, and came to the Reds via the Newark Bears, a Yankee farm.
