The 1909 T206 Set received its name from Jefferson Burdick, author of the American Card Catalog. ‘T’ in the T206 name stood for 20th century tobacco issues while ‘206’ was simply a number assigned to it.
J. C. (Rube) Benton, pitcher of the Cin- cinnati National League team, was born in Clinton, N. C., June 27, 1890. Pitching for the Macon team in 1910, Benton proved the sensation of the season in the South Atlantic League. His work attracted the attention of the major league clubs, and Cincinnati purchased him for $7,500. The Reds tried him out in the fall of 1910, but sent him to Chattanooga in 1911. He was recalled by the Cincinnati team in 1912.
The big fellow is one of the game's long ball hitters. He was in 102 games for the Braves in 1952, hitting .235. First came to the majors at end of 1940 season with St. Louis Cards. Remained with them until sold to Giants in January 1946, while still in the Navy. Also caught for Cincinnati before being traded to Braves in May 1950. Batted .313 in both 1950 and 1951. Holds hitting records.
